Tour Overview: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi & Kashmir Expedition

Embark on a soul-stirring 9-day journey that seamlessly blends the spiritual sanctity of the Shivalik Hills with the ethereal, alpine beauty of the Kashmir Valley. This meticulously crafted group tour is designed for travellers seeking a balance of divine blessings, adventure, and serene relaxation in “Paradise on Earth.” From the rhythmic chants at the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi to the mirror-like reflections of the Dal Lake, every moment of this itinerary is curated to provide a comprehensive experience of Northern India’s most iconic destinations.

The Spiritual Beginning: Katra

The journey commences in Katra, the bustling base camp for the pilgrimage to the holy cave of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi. Perched at an altitude of 5,200 feet, the trek to the Bhawan is more than just a physical challenge; it is a walk of faith. Whether you choose to trek the 12-km path, hire a pony, or take a quick helicopter ride to Sanji Chhat, the atmosphere is electric with devotion. After seeking blessings, the descent offers breathtaking views of the Trikuta Mountains, followed by a restful night in Katra to rejuvenate for the next leg of the adventure.

The Transition: A Scenic Rail Journey

One of the unique highlights of this package is the transition from Jammu/Katra to Srinagar via the newly developed rail link. Moving away from the traditional long road hauls, the train journey offers a modern, comfortable, and scenic route through the heart of the mountains, bringing you into the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, by midday.

The Heart of Kashmir: Srinagar & Sonamarg

Srinagar is a city of timeless elegance. You will explore the world-famous Mughal Gardens—Nishat, Shalimar, and Chashme Shahi—where terraced lawns and vibrant flowerbeds reflect the grandeur of a bygone era. No visit is complete without a stay in a traditional Deluxe Houseboat. Gliding across the Dal Lake in a Shikara during sunset, with the snow-capped peaks in the distance, is an experience that defines Kashmiri hospitality.

A day trip to Sonamarg, the “Meadow of Gold,” introduces you to the rugged beauty of the Sindh Valley. Here, the Thajiwas Glacier stands as a year-round snowy sentinel, offering opportunities for sledging and pony rides amidst a cerulean sky.

The Alpine Wonders: Gulmarg & Pahalgam

The tour then scales the heights of Gulmarg, famous for the Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world. Whether you are skiing on its world-class slopes or simply enjoying the panoramic views of the Apharwat Peak, Gulmarg leaves you breathless.

Finally, the journey winds down in Pahalgam, the “Valley of Shepherds.” This is the most tranquil part of the tour, where the Lidder River flows through lush green forests. You will visit the famous Betaab Valley (named after the Bollywood film) and Aru Valley, where the air is crisp and the scenery is reminiscent of the Swiss Alps. It is the perfect place for quiet reflection before heading back.

Conclusion

This 8-night, 9-day group tour is more than just a holiday; it is a collection of memories. With professional coordination, comfortable 3-star accommodations, and a perfect mix of pilgrimage and leisure, this package ensures that you experience the very best of Katra and Kashmir without any logistical stress.

Package Inclusions (Group Tour)

Package Exclusions (Not Included)

Mandatory Documents & Entry Rules:

1. Identity & Documents (Critical)

  • Aadhaar vs. Voter ID: While Aadhaar is widely used, the agency and local security often require a Voter ID or passport for group permits.

  • Physical Copies: Carry your original ID plus 5-6 photocopies. Digital copies on your phone are often not accepted at high-security checkpoints.

  • Photos: Carry 5 recent passport-size photographs for various permits.

2. Vaishno Devi New Rules (2026 Update)

  • Mandatory RFID Card: The old paper ‘Yatra Parchi’ is gone. Every pilgrim must collect a free RFID card from the Katra Railway Station or the bus stand.

  • Strict Time Windows: * You must start your trek within 10–12 hours of getting the RFID card.

    • You must return to the base camp within 24 hours. If you stay longer at the Bhawan, your card may be deactivated, and you could face a penalty.

  • RFID Return: You must return the card at the exit point after your yatra. Losing it or failing to return it carries a fine (approx. ₹100).

3. Connectivity & SIM Cards

  • Prepaid vs. Postpaid: Most outside prepaid SIM cards do not work in Jammu & Kashmir. Only postpaid SIMs (Jio and Airtel work best) will function on roaming.

  • Local SIM: If you don’t have a postpaid plan, you can buy a local “Tourist SIM” at the airport or Katra market using your Aadhaar card.

4. Clothing & Weather Preparation

  • Layering is Key: Temperatures can vary from $15°C$ in the sun to below $0°C$ at night or in Gulmarg/Sonamarg.

  • Footwear: Wear broken-in trekking shoes with a good grip. Do not wear brand-new shoes for the Vaishno Devi trek, as they often cause blisters.

  • Winter Gear: For departures in Oct-Dec, heavy woolens, thermals, gloves, and woollen caps are mandatory.

5. Health & Altitude

  • Acclimatization: Gulmarg and Sonamarg are at high altitudes. If you feel dizzy or have a headache, rest and drink plenty of water.

  • Medical Kit: Carry basic medicines for motion sickness (very important for the winding mountain roads), cold, acidity, and muscle pain.

6. Practical Tips

  • Cash is King: While UPI is growing, network issues in the mountains often make digital payments fail. Always carry enough physical cash for local shopping, ponies, and tips.

  • Early Bookings: If you want to take the Gondola in Gulmarg or a helicopter in Katra, these must be booked online weeks in advance. They are almost never available “on the spot.”

FAQs

1. Is the RFID card mandatory for the Vaishnav Devi trek?
Yes. As of 2026, the physical RFID card has fully replaced the old paper Yatra Parchi. It is mandatory for every pilgrim and is issued for free at the Katra Railway Station or the Bus Stand. You must carry a valid photo ID to collect it.
This refers to the newly launched rail link (USBRL) connecting Katra/Jammu directly to the Kashmir Valley. It is a scenic and comfortable way to travel, avoiding the long 8-10 hour road journey through the mountains.
Since you are visiting during late autumn/winter, heavy woolens are essential. Pack thermals, a heavy down jacket, gloves, a woolen cap, and sturdy walking shoes for the Vaishno Devi trek. Temperatures in Gulmarg and Pahalgam can drop below $0°C$.
No, Gondola (cable car) tickets are not included. It is highly recommended to book these online in advance via the official JK Cable Car portal, as they often sell out weeks before the travel date.
Absolutely. For those who cannot trek the 12km, the Shrine Board offers Helicopter services (from Katra to Sanji Chhat), Battery Cars (on the new track), and Ponies/Palkis. It is advisable to book helicopters well in advance through the official Shrine Board website.
As of February 2026, offline ticket counters for the Gondola have been largely discontinued due to high demand. You must book your tickets online well in advance (up to 60 days before) via the official J&K Cable Car website. Also, remember that if you miss your allotted time slot, you may be charged a fine (approx. ₹500 per person) to board a later cabin.
